DIY Zone: Keep Trash Sealed and Away

Keeping your home pest-free starts with the basics, and one of the most overlooked attractants is garbage. Flies, ants, rodents, and roaches are all drawn to trash that’s easy to reach. Luckily, a few small changes to how you handle trash can make a big difference.

Why sealing trash matters

When bins are left open or trash bags sit exposed, they release food smells that pests pick up on quickly. Ants can follow a scent trail straight from your yard to your pantry. Flies lay eggs in food scraps, and rodents see an overflowing bin as an invitation.

Tightly sealed, lidded bins block smells and limit pest access. And when those bins are placed away from doors, windows, and garage entry points, you make it harder for pests to find their way inside.

Don’t just toss and forget

Even outdoor trash cans need some attention. Rinse them out occasionally to remove build-up. Store them on a surface that drains well to avoid soggy, pest-attracting runoff. Inside the home, take out food waste daily and never leave full bags sitting overnight.

What to do if pests have already found your trash

If you’re already seeing ants, flies, or other activity, sealing your trash is a great first step—but you may need more support. Pests that have settled in don’t leave easily. Their scent trails, nesting spots, or food sources may already be established.

That’s where we come in. Our technicians can identify the source, break the cycle, and put up lasting barriers to keep pests from coming back.

Simple habits that help
