Friday FAQ: Why Are Bugs Still Active After a Cold Front?

|

We finally got a break from the heat, but if you were hoping one cold night would make every bug in DFW disappear, unfortunately, it doesn’t work quite that fast.

A sudden drop in temperature can slow some insects down, but it doesn’t necessarily stop activity altogether.

One Cold Night Isn’t Winter

Texas weather changes fast. If daytime temperatures warm back up, many insects can become active again pretty quickly.

Some pests also spend colder periods tucked into protected spots around homes, landscaping, garages, sheds, and other sheltered areas where temperatures stay a little more comfortable.

Your Home Is Still Warm

Even when it gets chilly outside, the inside of your home stays warm.

That can make indoor spaces, wall voids, garages, and other protected areas attractive places for pests that are already nearby. You may even notice some activity indoors after a temperature drop as insects look for shelter.

So, Is Pest Season Over?

Not quite. Pest activity changes with the weather, but in DFW, it rarely just stops overnight. Ants, roaches, spiders, and other pests may slow down, move to more protected areas, or pop back up as soon as temperatures rise again.

If you’re still seeing activity after the cold front, you’re not imagining it.
