Not all roaches are the same, and when it comes to German roaches, knowing what you’re looking at matters.
These are the small tan roaches, usually around half an inch long, with two dark stripes behind the head. That’s a big difference from the much larger reddish-brown roaches we commonly see around DFW.
Where Do German Roaches Hide?
German roaches like warm, protected areas close to food and water, which makes kitchens a favorite.
You’ll often find activity around refrigerators, dishwashers, cabinets, sinks, plumbing, and other tight spaces near appliances.
They’re mostly active at night, so the roach running across your counter may be only a small part of what’s hiding nearby.
How Did They Get Inside?
German roaches are excellent hitchhikers. They can come inside with boxes, bags, furniture, appliances, and other items brought into the home.
In apartments or other connected buildings, they can also move between units.
And no, finding them does not automatically mean your home is dirty. Once they get inside and find food, water, and shelter, they can settle in quickly.
Why Are German Roaches Different?
The biggest issue is how quickly they reproduce.
That means waiting to see whether the problem goes away on its own usually isn’t the best plan. Spraying the roaches you see may kill a few, but it doesn’t necessarily reach the population hiding behind appliances and inside cracks.
German roaches typically need a more targeted treatment approach.
